The process of moving involves more than just packing boxes and pallet racking. It begins from the moment someone decides to move to the second everything is unpacked. As soon as people make the choice to switch homes, they should prepare to move.

One Month Before it Begins

Within a month of the move, people should begin to prepare. At this point, they will need to give their landlord notice and begin collecting packing materials. Since their address is about to change, they will need to call their telephone company so they can have a landline installed or reconnected in their new home. They will also have to tell gas companies and electric providers that they will be the new owners. It is good idea to take some time off of work to move items, so any workplace should be notified about the few days off that will be required.

Within two weeks of the move date, it is time to start sorting items. Everything should be placed in a keep, toss or store pile. Anything that is going to be thrown out can either be taken to a garbage dump or to a local thrift store. Many thrift stores operate as charities and can give receipts for the donation. At tax time, this receipt can be used for deductions. Next, people should change their address online and book a moving company. If necessary, someone should be found to look after kids or pets. They should arrange for mail to be forwarded and begin packing items.

One Week Left

A week before the move, people should begin cleaning all of the rooms in their new home and old place. They can make a map of the new property so the moving company can find it easily. Before the move takes place, old blankets should be put down to protect the floors. As soon as the keys are ready, the family can pick them up. If storage options are necessary, it should be arranged now. Any items that need to be stored can be transferred before the big move takes place. On the day before the move, all of the boxes should be sealed and labeled. This will make them easier to find once the move is complete.

If it is possible, put any items in a garage so it is easier for the moving truck to pick them up. The freezer and refrigerator should be unplugged so it can defrost. This will make it easier and more hygienic to transfer. The last step before moving is to do a final cleaning of the house or apartment.

The Day of the Move

On the day of the move, any appliances should be disconnected and the lights should be turned off. All of the doors and windows on the old house should be locked and closed. As new items arrive at the new house, they should be checked in and placed in the room they will go in.

Extra Tips

One of the cheapest options for moving is to use boxes that are leftover at a grocery store or retail outlet. Although the boxes are not of the highest quality, they are sufficient for shorter moves. If the item is more expensive, a new moving box is better and the package should be marked as fragile. Ideally, each box should never weigh more than 50 pounds. This makes it easier for it to be moved and lowers the risk of it being dropped.

At the minute it is difficult to sell your home especially with statistics such as ‘one in three selling their homes fail to sell’. Not to worry though as the task is not impossible, simply follow our tips and you will be one step closer to your goal.

The first thing you need to consider before anything else is the reason you want to sell. It could be any number of reasons such as the house is too big for you, it holds bad memories, you have a new job in a different area, and it could even be that you just fancy a change. Whatever your reasons you need to be sure that it is the right thing for you to do.

Selling your home is a tricky business and if you’re a first time home seller you may not know where to begin! There are various ways you can sell your home including privately, through an estate agent or by auction. If choosing an estate agent make sure that you choose two or three rather than just your local one. You can then ask them to assess your home while you research how good they are at selling houses. This will allow you to choose one best suited to you putting your mind at rest.

Before putting your house on the market you should make sure that DIY jobs are completed around the home. There is nothing worse than viewing a property with lots of half finished jobs as buyers want something that they can move into with ease. When buyers walk into a house it comforts them to know that it is ready to move into, any other jobs they feel need doing after that they can do themselves.

Make sure that you clear away any clutter lying around your home and that it is clean and tidy. A cluttered or messy house makes it difficult for potential buyers to see themselves living there. This can deter them from being interested in the property.

It is also important to make sure that there is always somebody available to show people around your home. If nobody is available the chances are they could view another property and choose to take that one.

Leaving large spaces of time between the viewing and the buying can often leave the buyers with too much time to think resulting in them having cold feet and backing out. Organise a conveying solicitor to sort this for you to make sure the buy is quick and easy.

Finally in order to get your house viewed and sold as quickly as possible try giving your estate agents an incentive to want to sell your house such a 0.5% increase if they sell the house in 6 weeks. Don’t sign up for a 12 week contract as that is too long and you could easily move on to another estate agent.

A home that isn’t filled with light, fresh air, and household plants can have a major impact on your health and well-being. If you find that your home is far too dark and cluttered, and preventing you from enjoying the benefits of being surrounded by plant life, have you ever considered taking advantage of a self storage unit?

A self storage unit can help you organize your home by moving unnecessary clutter, furniture, and anything else that’s just taking up space out of sight and out of mind. With all that new extra space in your home that results from moving unnecessary things into self storage, you will have plenty of places to put plant life to help improve the air quality in your home and your well-being in general.

The idea behind using plants to help purify a space was based upon research done by NASA in the 1980s. Their goal was to to help improve their air within the space shuttle for astronauts, but as with other space-related research, their findings made their way to the general public.

Nowadays, the benefits of having ample plant life within a home are becoming well-known, and smart homeowners are finding ways to free up space to make room for as many plants as they can. To find that space, self storage often isn’t the first thought that crosses people’s minds, but it can be a much more practical means of storage than piling up everything in a spare room or garage.

Once you have moved all your extra household clutter off to a self storage unit, you can now start filling that extra space with plants, and by doing so, you will be getting a number of benefits. Not only will the greenery of plants improve the style of your home, but the actual home environment will be improved too as plants help increase oxygen levels and absorb harmful chemicals in the air.

For example, some plants will actually absorb chemicals such as formaldehyde and benzene, which are commonly found in household cleaning products. A great plant for removing formaldehyde includes snake plants (which are sometimes known as a mother-in-law’s tongue). A snake plant is terrific because it requires very little attention and can actually live in humid spaces like a bathroom with almost no watering.

Another great plant that requires little attention is an azalea. It’s a great choice for a house plant as it is a beautiful, flowering plant that can enhance the décor of any home. However, these plants do require a nice amount of sun, so be sure to move any household clutter that’s blocking your windows to your self storage unit for safe keeping.

However, you should be careful when choosing the right plants for your home if you have pets, as some can be toxic to animals. Be especially mindful if you have a cat since they enjoy crawling up on all the furniture in the home. Once you move all of your extra furnishings and clutter to a self storage unit, they will have little left to climb on except for all your new plants, so you must be sure that they aren’t toxic.

Just as long as you choose plants that fit your home décor, living space, and don’t put your pets at risk, making the choice to clear out your household clutter and move it all into a self storage unit, can actually have a very meaningful impact on your quality of life. Your home can easily become a much more comfortable place to live, accented with beautiful greenery that not only adds to visual aesthetics, but makes your home a much healthier place to live as well.

Whether it’s to Germany or Japan, moving to a new country is a huge step. Everything will be so different in another country including the culture, food and people. You will have to start over and learn new ways of doing things. That is why you have to do some careful planning before you make the move across the ocean. Here are three things you should consider before you move to a new country.

Cost of Living

The cost of living is one of the most important things you should consider when moving to a new country. It is possible that the cost of living in the country you want to move to is higher than you would expect. Make sure to find out how much things cost like rent, food, cars and clothes. If you do not find out about the cost of living, you could be in a lot of trouble once you make the move. It is also a good idea to start looking for jobs beforehand. Whether you look for jobs in Singapore or London, having a job in the country you move to will be beneficial.

Culture

The country you want to move to likely has a completely different culture than what you are used to. The people in the new country will probably interact differently while they are working, shopping and doing business. It is important to be aware of these cultural differences and decide if you can adapt to them. If you are unable to adapt to the new culture, it will not be easy living in the new country. Also, if the native language of the country you want to move to is not English, you should try to learn at least some of it beforehand.

Housing

Unless housing is taken care of by your employer, you have to look for a place to stay in the new country. Before you move, you should search for a place to live on the Internet. Understand your rights as a foreigner before looking for housing. For example, some countries only allow foreigners to buy certain buildings like townhouses or condominiums.

Moving to a new country can be very stressful, so you might want to get assistance from a professional relocation company. A relocation company can assist you with several aspects of your move including visa applications, pet relocation, language training and school advisory services.

Virginia was named in honor of Elizabeth “Virgin Queen” of England, and is also known as the “Old Dominion.” This state is an historical pillar of the United States as one of the thirteen original colonies. Not only rich with cultural heritage the mid-Atlantic location is conveniently set between New York and Florida and boasts its own beaches. In fact Virginia is a leading producer of shellfish.

Virginia Beach, Richmond, Arlington, Roanoke, Norfolk, Alexandria, and Williamsburg are all rich in heritage with small town feel and big city amenities. The current population of the state is about seven million people.

In Virginia you will experience all four seasons. There are also beautiful hiking and biking trails across the Blue Ridge Mountains, and white water rafting, bird watching, and a lifetime of scenery for the outdoor explorers. There is Great Falls National Park where you can see the Potomac River work its way through the Mather Gorge. The Great Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuge is another area where you can observe more than 500 wildlife species and see the well know cypress trees that grow from the water. Southwest Virginia’s Grayson Highlands State Park is another popular destination you will want to experience.

Virginia public schools have been ranked fourth in the country and there are numerous well known colleges and universities. The career opportunities are diverse with the government’s CIA headquarters, the Department of Defense and agricultural industry. The commute to Washington D.C. is not far where job opportunities are abundant as well. The services industry has a host of options including healthcare, hospitality, technology and engineering. Technology has been the greatest growth sector, with many consultants and businesses providing services for the federal government. The agricultural industry is thriving with tobacco, livestock, broilers, and beef cattle. Crops consist of potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and apples.

Moving to Virginia will require a stop after you get settled at a branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for either a state ID or driver’s license and vehicle registration. Anyone 19 years of age or older with a driver’s license from another U.S. state or territory, a Canadian province, France, or Germany, is required to apply for a Virginia license. Be sure to bring along two proofs of identity, proof of your Virginia residency, and proof of your Social Security number. If you show proof that you have finished driver’s education, or have a learner’s permit you might not have to take the written or road test.

Your vehicle requires a safety inspection and depending on where you live in Virginia you might need an emissions test. Auto insurance is required with specific minimum coverage. Before you can register your car in Virginia you need to get a Virginia title and then you can purchase license plates. All this must be done within thirty days of moving to the state. Also depending on where you live you might be required to register your vehicle locally and there might be a personal property tax due at that time.

Moving to Virginia exacerbates an already stressful situation, but there are tips to ease your headache. Except in certain circumstances, you know a move is coming well before D-Day. However, many people put off packing and planning until the last minute. While cramming might have worked in college, it causes unnecessary stress and oversights when it comes to moving.

There are plenty of items in your home that can be packed well in advance. Save money by picking up free newspapers and scouring for sturdy boxes at stores as soon as you know about a move. Consider what items, such as solid wood furniture, will need more than one person to get in the truck. Here are a few industry insider tips for scoring an easy move.

Plan Realistically

I spent one year researching and writing for an insurance company, and not all renters and homeowners insurance policies are created equal. Your belongings may or may not be covered during a move, and it’s something you need to find out immediately. Many people also forget to update their information when changing homes, which can result in problems if a loss occurs post-move.

Don’t think that gathering a group of friends to help you pack and load a truck will make things easier. There’s no better investment than a reputable moving company. You can save money by hiring movers solely for loading a truck and another set of movers to unload if the move is a big one. You can take care of the driving, but movers can get done in one hour what will take you (and your friends) the entire day.

The Risks of DIY

If you’re determined to take care of the entire process yourself, tread with caution. Box up one room at a time when it comes down to crunch time. Ideally you’ve been packing items you don’t need daily for a few weeks. Keep in mind that boxes should weigh no more than 20 pounds, which means no boxes dedicated solely to books or other heavy items.

There’s no such thing as too much padding. Newspaper is a recyclable, free option, but it’s easy to get drawn into spending on bubble wrap and fancy boxes. You never have to spend money on moving supplies beyond packing tape. Most people head to grocery stores for their free boxes, but liquor stores are actually a goldmine filled with smaller (easier to carry) and sturdier boxes.

Read the Fine Print

This advice goes for your insurance policy as well as moving companies. Some companies charge per stair, which isn’t a smart move if you have a storied house or live in a condo on the top floor. Some companies will happily pack for you, but you’re still paying per hour, so it’s best to get as much done on your end as possible.

Accidents, losses and breakage can happen on the road. Take precautions and know exactly what will happen if something goes amiss. Your energy should be focused on family and work in your new home, not worrying about that oversized lamp.

Many people make the decision to keep an old house when moving into a new one in Virginia. Maybe you plan to move back later, maybe you’re waiting for the property to appreciate, or maybe you just can’t bear to cut ties for sentimental reasons. These reasons, among others, make putting a house up for rent very attractive to many homeowners.

If you don’t have any experience with renting, you may be wondering where to start. Deciding to become a landlord isn’t something to be taken lightly. Here are a few tips to get you on your way to a successful renting situation.

Do the Math

It’s easy to think you can just place a rent value on the home that will cover property taxes and any mortgage you may have left over. But there are many more expenses that come with renting. Consider all of the following costs in deciding whether or not you can realistically afford to rent the property:

Maintenance costs, from every day to large repairs, including paying a heavy equipment dealer for any big jobs.

The possibility of negligent renters who get behind on payments.

The possibility of having to evict tenants, which can cost thousands of dollars.

Having enough money to cover payments for time between renters.

Calculate what you would need to charge monthly to be able to rent the house. Then, compare the rental market value on other similar houses in your area to see if the amount you need is attainable.

Know the Laws

The laws surrounding rental properties vary by state. It pays to do a little research to understand what is expected of a landlord by law in your state and what rights you have versus what rights will be given to your tenants.

In all states there is some type of equal opportunity law requiring you to have a fair process for choosing applicants. To stay in line with the law, you should select your rental criteria and put all applicants through the same tests to base your decision on. You should consider living history, credit and criminal background.

Be All About Business

Becoming a landlord is running your own business. You should handle situations in a professional manner and not get too personal. You must understand your former home will be a source of income and damage can and will happen.

Everything you do should be by the book and documented thoroughly. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you’ll just meet a nice couple, give them the keys and not worry about it. You never know when that couple may stop paying rent or destroy your house, and without any documentation, you’ll be left without a leg to stand on.

One thing that many people consider when they are moving to Virginia is the purchase of new furniture for their home. This week, we’d like to present a new guest author who has experience with a modern marvel; a new mattress that is destined to change the way you sleep in your new home.

It is no secret that many people today live very fast-paced, stressful lives. Most of us have to work outside the home and we come home to even more chores that we try to get accomplished in the remaining hours before bedtime. When we are running late, we often try to cut back on our hours of sleep in order to get everything accomplished. We fall into bed hoping that we will awake in the morning filled with energy and determination. Unfortunately, if we do not get a good night’s sleep, we will be tired and we will fall even farther behind.

There are several factors that contribute to poor sleep. If we have been worrying a lot, it will be hard to turn off the mind and have a good night’s sleep. Unfortunately, a restful sleep is impossible when our minds are racing. Drinking too much caffeine in the evening will keep most of us awake. Sleep becomes even more difficult when we are also feeling back pain that keeps us tossing and turning all night, trying to find at least one comfortable position.

Back pain can be traced to a variety of different causes. It can be the result of doing hard physical labor during the day. It is often the result of sleeping on a mattress that does not properly support the body.

A regular mattress can actually make muscle and back pain worse. The reason is the mattress does not support the weight of the body very evenly. This puts increased pressure on points of the body where the body sinks into the mattress, such as at the shoulders and the hips. The pressure of the body on the mattress will reduce circulation in these areas, leading to increased muscle soreness and discomfort.

The muscles of the body will not be able to relax unless the body is properly supported in all areas. Most conventional mattresses that rely on springs for support will not relieve muscle and back pain. Conventional mattresses that are worn out will be even more uncomfortable because the body will have to adjust to areas where there is too much pressure and other areas where the mattress offers no support at all.

Anyone who wants to have a mattress that can help relieve back pain will want to know about Intellibed – the best mattress for back pain. The Intellibed provides proper support to the hips and shoulders so the sleeper can easily get comfortable and awake in the morning with no pain or discomfort in the muscles of the body.

Moving to Virginia is truly a challenging experience for most people. This can become even more difficult if a family employs a sketchy moving company – those that load up stuff in pristine condition, then delivers the goods in beat up shape or those that demand more money than what was originally agreed upon.

Moving companies with questionable reputation abound these days. Sadly, a lot of home owners fall victim for their scams, often resulting to lost or damaged belongings and wasted money. If you are planning to relocate, you are likely to employ the service of a moving company. To protect yourself from being scammed, here are some safety precautions you can do.

Ask referrals from your network

There is a general consensus that word of mouth is the best way to find a reputable mover. Hence, when doing your search, start with your network. Relatives and friends are definitely good sources, but you might also want to ask realtors. Real-estate agents, with whom you buy or sell a home, know all the ropes about the housing industry. Hence, they can surely refer creditable professional movers whom you can have a good transaction with.

Do an investigation

Check with your local authorities to see if there are complaints filed against a moving company you are planning to hire. You can also check websites and message boards that are dedicated to exposing moving scams. These sources can also provide you with a list of quality movers.

Get several estimates

When shopping for movers, it will be wise to get several estimates instead of settling with the first company that you have considered. This will allow you to properly compare their estimates. If you find out that one or two in your list offer something too low or too high, then you know that something is wrong.

Make sure that the mover visits your house before the move

Professional movers usually send a representative to the home or office of a potential client to assess the logistics and items that have to be moved. Good companies will also spend time to answer questions from potential clients and offer to give a walk through in their warehouses where they temporarily store stuff.

Demand for a detailed contract and know the claims process

An excellent moving contract should contain all the details concerning the services that will be carried out by the mover and there should not be hidden charges. Keep in mind that if a company wants to provide its customer with security and information, they will include everything in writing so that the transaction is recorded.

Aside from the contract, you should also learn their claims process. Even reputable moving companies occasionally make mistakes, and if you want to make sure that you will be able to recoup the damages, you should be aware if they have a solid claims process.

When you find out you have to move to Virginia at the last minute, there are certain things you just have to accept will not get done. For example, unlike moves with more notice, there will not be time to clean out closets or have a garage sale to get rid of some stuff. The key is to prioritize what absolutely has to be done so that the most important tasks are accomplished.

Where will you go?
With a rush move, chances are that you won’t have time to look for a home to buy, but you still need some place to stay. You could stay at an extended stay hotel. The space is small, but utilities and furniture are provided. Renting an apartment or condo would offer more space and a homier feel, but you would have to provide furniture, which means unpacking more than once. You would also have to sign a lease for a certain amount of time. If you have friends in the new location, you could ask to stay with them, but there is always the chance you might wear out your welcome. No situation is ideal, but keep in mind that it is temporary and will help you transition.

Where will your stuff go?
Two of the most important tasks for any move are getting you and your stuff to the new location. For a rush move, it is recommended that you hire professional movers to pack and load your items. While it is less expensive to do it yourself, the amount of time and energy it requires are not worth it in a last minute situation. Stick to doing tasks that only you can do, like saying goodbyes and having the post office forward (or hold) your mail.

That said, there are still some preparations you may want to make before the movers arrive.

1.Pack valuables (jewelry, family heirlooms or your laptop) and important documents (birth certificate, Social Security card, insurance papers, passport, etc) to keep with you throughout the transition.

2.Depending on where you will stay when you first arrive at the new location, you may need some essential items like a bed, a coffee maker or a towel. Pack those items separately and mark them in a distinguishable fashion. Use colored duct tape and tape a big “X” on each box or something so the movers know when to deliver those items on the other end.

3.Eat whatever food is in your refrigerator and pantry before the movers arrive so you’re not left with a pile of items that will spoil or have to be thrown away at the last minute. If you won’t be able to eat it all, consider giving it to a friend or donating the non-perishables to a local charity.

After the movers pack and load all your belongings, where will they take those things? Because you will likely be in temporary housing, you have a couple of options. Some moving companies will store your things for an additional fee, depending on the length of time. The benefit of that arrangement is that your items do not have to be unloaded more than once. Another option is to put your belongings in storage. This is a better plan if your temporary housing will last more than a couple of weeks.

Those are the main tasks at hand. You can deal with utility companies and online banking on your cell phone or computer while you’re en route.
